There are a lot of advantages to buying a used vehicle rather than a new one – but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy process.

If you’re looking to get a quality car with a lower price tag, you’ll want to take these precautionary steps as you shop:

1. Research the Model

Once you’ve narrowed your search down to a specific vehicle, you’ll want to do plenty of research on the model. This means visiting blogs and forums to find out the weak and strong points for which the model is known. You’ll also want to find out what repairs and maintenance on the vehicle typically cost.

2. Check the Vehicle History Report

Before you make a purchase, you’ll want to find out whether the car was ever in an accident and if there are any problems being hidden by the seller. If you know the vehicle identification number (VIN), you can purchase a vehicle history report from a variety of companies. Almost immediately, you’ll be able to gain access to information regarding the vehicle’s history.

3. Have the Car Inspected by Professionals

Many used car buyers fail to take this important step prior to making a purchase. By having a mechanic take a look at the vehicle first, you can ensure that there aren’t any underlying problems of which you aren’t aware. The good news is these inspections are generally pretty quick and inexpensive – making them well worth the investment.

Besides calling a mechanic, you’ll also want to contact a locksmith who can ensure that everything from the windows to the key-less entry and alarm systems are working properly; a locksmith in Scarborough or in a surrounding area will take the time to ensure that all manual and automatic locking systems are intact. If anything needs to be repaired, he or she will be able to offer a quote that will give you an indication of the cost of work that needs done.

4. Take a Look at the Tires

Another inspection you’ll want to make is on the vehicle’s tires. If you notice that things are worn unevenly, repairs to the vehicle’s alignment or tire shocks may be needed. Should you notice that something is off with the tire wear, you’ll want to be sure to mention it to the mechanic. He or she will be able to give you more information regarding the root of the problem.

5. Examine the Vehicle for Rust

Once a rust problem begins, it can be incredibly expensive and difficult to fix. For this reason, you’ll want to do a quick examination for any rust growing under the rocker panels on each side of the car. It’s also important to do a quick floor check of the interior of the vehicle for any soft spots caused by rust. By simply pressing down on the floor of the vehicle, you’ll be able to feel around for anything unusual.

Since rust is such a difficult problem to resolve, you may want to reconsider making a purchase if it’s found anywhere on the vehicle.

6. Get the Signed Title after Concluding a Purchase

If you’ve performed all these tips, you may be ready to move forward with a purchase. As a last act of precaution, be sure to obtain a signed title after the purchase has been completed. The right paperwork can make your life a lot easier when it comes to licensing and insuring your vehicle.

As you can see, there are a variety of things to keep in mind while making a used car purchase. While buying a used vehicle can be a smart decision – especially for your pocket book – you want to be sure to approach the situation with care. Take these steps throughout the process and you’ll be sure to enter your purchase with a level head.
